Mary Pat Haley, BVM (St. Thomas), professor of communication at Loyola University in Chicago is the recipient of the Dux Mirabilis award, given to “a current member of the Loyola University faculty or staff in recognition of extraordinary leadership and service to the University and its mission.” It also notes her contributions to Mundelein College. Mary Pat has completed nearly 40 years as a professor and administrator at the schools. The award was conferred at the annual Founders’ Dinner. 

Mary Maas, BVM (Alcuin) chaired the National Convocation of Jail and Prison Ministry in Milwaukee last month. The theme was “Bringing Peace and Hope Home.” Among the workshop presenters were BVM Joanne Schneider (Joeline) and Jeanne d’Arc Omilan, OSF, speaking on “Biblical-Based Retreats in Jail.” Mary is in Restorative Justice ministry in the Twin Cities. 

Georgeann Quinlan, BVM (Immaculate) has received the Older Women’s League (OWL) Wonderful Older Woman award for 2005 from the Denver chapter as “an outstanding OWL member who has achieved many accomplishments and made a difference in the lives of those around you.” 

Georgeann served as OWL president two times, and was a major force in organizing the Governor’s Conference on Aging. This year, “Using her organizing skills and her vast knowledge of Denver’s senior community, she took an active role in the Medicare-sponsored $600 Prescription Drug Program 0 setting up twelve sites and taking part in training sessions for OWL volunteers.” 

Jane McDonnell, BVM (Bonaventure) has two poems published in Gallery 2005, the annual collection from the Dubuque Area Writers Guild. The poems are “A Red and Gray Day” and “Sweet Bread.” The book contains 76 poems written by 41 authors in the Tri-State area.  

A student of Martha Ryder, BVM (Briant) has been named one of 141 American high school senior 2005 Presidential Scholars. Brenna Decker was among those selected based on academic achievement, essays school evaluations and transcripts, as well as evidence of leadership and community service. 

Martha, a mathematics teacher at Price of Peace College Prep in Clinton, Iowa, was nominated by Brenna as her most influential teacher and will accompany Brenna to Washington, D.C. “I’ve had her every year since seventh grade for math. She’s awesome,” Brenna said. 

Associate Kathleen Maas Weigert is co-editor of a new book, Living the Catholic Social Tradition: Cases and Commentary, published by Sheed and Ward.  It is designed to “help readers understand different social justice issues within the framework of Catholic social thought, and to consider how they can contribute to the tradition and develop it further, thus keeping the Catholic social tradition alive.” 

Three Chicago BVMs are active in STOP Colorectal Cancer, an educational organization. Doris Walsh, BVM (Thomas More) edits the quarterly newsletter, STOP Watch; Monica Seelman (Alvin) does the proofreading; Catherine Gibbons, BVM (Rita Eileen) helps translate their materials into Spanish. 

The Roberta Kuhn Center for senior citizens in Dubuque, sponsored by the BVM congregation, has been recognized by the Iowa Governor’s Conference on Aging as a “Shining Star” for making a difference in the lives of older Iowans. Director Kathryn Lawlor, BVM (John Laurian) and former director Faith Lautz, BVM received the award at a luncheon in Des Moines for the 23 winners. 

Janet Desmond, BVM (below) congratulates Kiley Friedrich, Divine Savior Holy Angels student in Milwaukee, who is this year’s recipient of the Sister Janet Schewe, BVM Scholarship. She was a long-time teacher and administrator at the school; the scholarship was named for Janet at the time of her retirement. 

 

BVMs left two long-time missions in the past few months. The convent at St. Anne’s, East Moline, is being transformed into part of a new merged school, Our Lady of Grace. In Pasadena, Calif., St. Philip’s Convent is closing and will be demolished as part of a parish-wide facility restructuring. BVMs have served at St. Philip’s from 1927-75 and 1991-2005.
