Bequests Benefit Retired Sisters

The Sisters of Charity, BVM have been honored and blessed to receive bequests from former students, friends and family. These gifts are a beautiful tribute to the ministries and missions of all BVMs

A recent bequest from William and Dorothy Furlong Cullen will be used for educational projects and purposes. Dorothy graduated from St. Joseph Academy, Des Moines, Iowa in 1935. She married William, also a native of Des Moines, in California in 1942 while Bill was serving in the U.S. Army Air Corps as a pilot and instructor.

Dorothy was a primary school teacher and Bill was a high school teacher and principal in Anaheim, Calif. Their visit to Mount Carmel in 1995 was memorable as Dorothy was able to visit with BVMs who had taught her at SJA in the 1930s.

The bequest from Dorothy and Bill provided for the remodeling of the Motherhouse library, subscriptions to newspapers and magazines and reference materials and books. It will also be used for seminars, speakers and workshops, providing educational opportunities for BVMs and staff.

We are grateful for the thoughtful planning of William and Dorothy Furlong Cullen for the distribution of their estate.
