Pat Bombard, BVM participated in an ecumenical conference on spiritual leadership in Nairobi, Kenya, and did a presentation on “Spirituality for Life and Action in a Global Village.” She also was presenter at a joint meeting of major superiors of men's and women's congregations in East Africa on “The Spirituality and Philosophy of Team Leadership.”

In February, she will speak on “Eco-Spirituality: Reverence for Life” at the Chicago Archdiocese's Catholic Festival of Faith. Pat is executive director of the Institute for Spiritual Leadership in Chicago.

 

Ann DeNicolo, BVM (Ann Thomas) is one of three persons who received the Cesar Chavez Award from the Sarasota/Manatee Farm Worker Advocates and Supporters for her many years of service to Florida 's migrant community, especially during the aftermath of Hurricane Charley.

Ann is program director for DeSoto County Catholic Charities, Diocese of Venice. The extensive damage from the season's hurricanes has put more than 100,000 farm workers out of work.

 

Mary Jean Ferry, BVM (St. Christopher) has received the Benemerenti Award from the Archdiocese of Los Angeles. This is a papal honor given to those who have shown exemplary service to their church, family and community. Mary Jean is chaplain at St. Camillus Pastoral Center, which serves patients at Los Angeles County Hospital and USC Medical Center. She also teaches wellness exercises to cancer patients awaiting treatments.

 

Jeanne Fielding, BVM (Chabanel) has written and self-published a set of “Little Meditations on the Mysteries of the Rosary” as a tool for meditation and prayer. Copies are available by sending a stamped (.63 US ), 6" x 9" self-addressed envelope to her at Mount Carmel.

 

LaDonna Manternach, BVM has joined the Board of Trustees of Divine Word College, Epworth, Iowa ; this is the college seminary for the Society of the Divine Word missionary order. An assistant professor of music at Clarke College, Dubuque, LaDonna recently sang the soprano role in Handel's Messiah, performed by the Sinsinawa Chorus and Orchestra.

 

Annette Petty, BVM (Juanita Mary) once again took top honors at the Senior World Games in St. George, Utah, meriting two gold medals and one silver in the pickleball competition.

Pickleball is a combination of tennis, ping pong and badminton, using a whiffle ball the size of a baseball. Fast-paced, it is played on a badminton-court sized playing surface.

Annette has won a total of 13 medals from both the Senior Olympics and Senior World Games, and is seeded #1 among all U.S.A. pickleball players.

 

Vicki Smurlo, BVM is the social worker on a hospice team that has received the “Everyday Heroes” certificate and pin for “delivering excellent service to Kaiser Permanente members and the communities Kaiser serves.” Vicki does psychosocial counseling and arranges for services helpful to patients and families in the central Los Angeles area.

 

Helen Thompson, BVM (St. George) spent two weeks as a Red Cross volunteer assisting in hurricane recovery efforts in Mississippi, Alabama and the Florida Panhandle by doing financial data entry and phone communication with victims.

“Just being mindful of why I was doing the …task was a spiritual practice. Sometimes, I even talked prayerful to those I was giving assistance to,” Helen said. “The cards I issued ranged between $25,000 and $40,000 a day.”

 

Sisters United News (S.U.N.) of the Upper Midwest, which includes the BVM congregation, is among the top five recipients of a “Best Practices” award from the National Communicators Network of Women Religious. The project was a 2004 election year radio spot and campaign, produced by the communication directors of 13 communities of Sisters. This is the second successive year that SUN has won a collaborative award from NCNWR.
