Sandra Rodemyer, BVM (St. Philip) has received a Governor's Volunteer Award from Iowa Governor Chet Culver. She was selected for the length of service award by the Department of Correction for her volunteer work at the Iowa Correctional Institution for Women. Sandy has been a team leader of Residents Encounter Christ (REC) retreats for 15 years.

The Governor's Volunteer Award program honors and recognizes volunteers for the commitment, service and time that they contribute to Iowa 's government agencies and nonprofit organizations. More than 600 volunteers were elected in 2007. Iowa consistently ranks in the top 10 states in the nation for the percentage of adults engaged in volunteering.

St. Francis Xavier Parish and School, Phoenix, recently honored the five BVM Sister “founders” of the elementary school in 1936: Sisters Ermentrude Huschke, Floriana Malloy, Presentice Quane, St. Eleanor Flynn and Laurelle Pestotnik. A plaque was unveiled at a “Mass in the Grass” and a reception followed. The plaque was contributed by Associates Virginia Shiel and Ann Donlin .

For a fourth year, Sisters United News (SUN), a consortium of 12 communities of Catholic Sisters of the Upper Mississippi Valley—including the BVMs—was among eleven of the top “Best Practices” award recipients at the recent National Communicators Network for Women Religious (NCNWR) 2007 conference in Rapid City, SD, this fall.

This year's recognition of SUN is for two areas: Public Relations Campaign using a radio spot to raise awareness about immigration reform and Interactive Communications by developing a website as a resource for the media about Catholic sisters. (www.sistersunitednews.org)

Representing the BVM congregation are Mira Mosle, BVM, director of communications; and Angie Connolly, director of publications.
