Coordination

Herstory

In 1988, the BVM Congregation approved a long-range plan, "Directions for Moving the Congregation Toward the Year 2000." One of the Directions concerned women:

"We, the BVM Congregation, commit ourselves to freeing women, especially ourselves, from internal and external forms of domination and to promote equality of access and participation for women in church and society."

The Women's Office, created as a response, has been in existence for 12 years. The Office strives to reflect the basic BVM core values: freedom, justice, education and charity.

In September 2000, a new mode of leadership began with the creation of the Coordinating Circle of three persons. At present it is comprised of one BVM Associate and two BVMs. All are equal in decision-making with the everyday working of the office the task of one person.

The Advisory Circle assists the Coordinating Circle in their work. BVMs, BVM Associates and lay women of diverse races, cultures and ages model inclusivity and provide wisdom, creative options, information and support to The Women's Office.
